Sponsoring Parents, Grandparents
The Government of Canada allows Canadian permanent residents and citizens to sponsor their parents and grandparents, by blood or adoption, to become permanent residents of Canada.
Interested individuals can submit both the sponsorship and the permanent residence applications together at the same time.
Sponsorship means supporting them and their dependents financially and making sure they don’t need social assistance from the government. Under the Family Sponsorship program, it is also possible to sponsor the divorced parents/grandparents’ spouses or partners.
Requirements
You can be a sponsor for your parents and grandparents if you are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a person registered under the Canadian Indian Act.
Guarantee
To become a sponsor, you must promise to financially take care of the persons you are sponsoring for a certain period. This is called an undertaking. If you live outside Quebec, the undertaking commits you to:
- providing financial support for your sponsored family members for 20 years, starting when they become permanent residents
- repaying any provincial social assistance (money from the government) your sponsored family members get during that time
