Federal Self Employed

The Self-employed Persons Program gives Canadian permanent residence to foreign self-employed class culture and sports professionals.

Freelancers practicing culture and sports activities can move to Canada, and contribute to the cultural or athletic life of the country.

They get their permanent resident status immediately when they land in Canada under the program, and continue their activities as self-employed.

Requirements

Relevant experience

Candidates are expected to have at least 2 years of self-employed work experience in the cultural or athletics activities in their home countries, or 2 years of participation experience at a global level in cultural/athletics activities, or a combination of these in the last five years.

Education

Candidates must have at least a secondary school certificate.

Speak English or French

Candidates must take an approved English or French test, and get their best scores.

Selection criteria

If all eligibility requirements have been met, candidates will be assessed in a point-based immigration system, where eligibility to immigrate is determined by whether the self-employer is able to score above a threshold number of points.

For example, candidates get more points in the selection process for having 3, 4, or 5 years of relevant experience.

The topmost score is 100 points. Candidates must score a minimum of 35 points out of 100 points for all the selection factors. More than required work experience, education, or language skills means more points.

Age

Candidates get points based on their ages at the time when the visa office receives the application. Ages between 21-49 get the maximum points for the Age criteria, which is 10.

Adaptability

Candidates will have to prove how easy it would be to assimilate into Canadian society for them. Some personal factors such as education level and language proficiency of the candidate’s spouse/partner, whether or not they had a previous study/work experience in Canada, and having a close relative in Canada might add up to 6 points to the candidate’s grading.
